Cornell University

Hazing Prevention Model

We apply a public health approach.

Preventing hazing requires a comprehensive approach involving multiple strategies.

Cornell University takes a campus-wide public health approach that includes eight key dimensions:

  • Leadership and culture change strategies
  • Policy initiatives
  • Reporting options
  • Educational initiatives
  • Positive team building
  • Transparency regarding violations
  • Support for those who are hazed
  • Enforcement

Students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, and community members each have a role to play in preventing and responding to hazing. Effective prevention requires understanding healthy and unhealthy group-formation behaviors, as well as the conditions and contexts that foster them. Effective responses are swift, meaningful, and transparent.

Cornell works to apply data and theory-informed practices to addressing this important campus health concern.
