Fall 2015

Kappa Sigma Fraternity

Description: During the Fall of 2015 associate members of the fraternity were encouraged by the upper-level members to be in possession of specific non-fraternity related items at all times. Additionally, the fraternity’s new member educator admitted to requiring the associate members to perform calisthenics as a punishment for under performance on a fraternity quiz.

Outcome: through mutual agreement between the fraternity and the Office of Fraternities and Sororities and Independent Living, the organization was found to be responsible for violating the policy on hazing. As a result, the chapter was required to work with the OFSIL Staff to rethink their approach to new member orientation to be better prepared to appropriately manage scenarios as an effective and appropriate leader of peers; host an education session for the entire membership to increase competence on this topic; and, was placed on Disciplinary Probation, concluding January 1, 2017.
